Last weekend it was warm, so we planted our garden.
Well, in Colorado, it can snow *anytime*! And, it *will* snow when one is least prepared or suspecting.
Thus, on Wednesday night, I came home and Dennis was in the garage with pvc pipe & heat lamps. A Man After My Own Heart…My Hero!!!
He constructed these shelters for our raised beds, in the hopes we could save the greens from the impending storm.
The next two days, we were subjected to wintry conditions (several inches of snow and all night rain/sleetings). I happened to come down with a really nasty cold around the same time, so I spent these couple days under my own warm covers. The plants & I stayed toasty warm!
On Saturday, I went out to see what survived and was really surprised at the wave of heat which blasted out from the covering. It was probably close to 90 dF in those beds! The plants directly under the 250 watt bulbs were completely dead.
It will probably show up as a spike in our energy bill. But, we managed to save 90% of our crop. Whew!
