Aguas Calientes – The Spa!
On Saturday, we took a bus to Ollyantaytambo and then we road on the Peru Rail to Aguas Calientes. We visited the hot springs, went shopping, and had a nice relaxing evening.
We arrived in Ollyantaytambo mid-morning. Around the main square, there are several shops where tourists can find stuff for the inca trail hike or pick up snacks for the train ride.

This grocer had several flavors of ramen noodles…which we bought when Dennis was feeling under the weather.
The main square. Since it was close to Christmas time, they had several of these recycled bottle trees…which I thought was an inventive use of water bottles.

Laura having fun on Peru Rails. The train ride to Aguas Calientes took 1.5 hours, if I recall correctly and it was really scenic. We had all been up late at Paddy’s the night before, so eventually, the rocking of the train put us all to sleep!
Larisse took this picture of Dennis and I as we walked up to the Hot Springs. They rent towels, suits, and even flip flops in town. But, we brought our own!
The hot springs were nice, but not as hot as I remembered from the last time I was there. The natural water did not sit well with Chrissy and Andrew, so they got out after about 20 minutes. Dennis and I are used to natural water, so it didn’t bother us that it was a funky color/smell. But, it felt really nice to just relax and stare up at the beauty of the lush, Peruvian wilds.
After the spa, we headed back to the hotel to get cleaned up. Our hotel was right on the mighty Urubumba river, so we could hear the sound of the rapids. I hoped that there wasn’t any flooding over the course of the next 24 hours…

For dinner, we went out as a group and there was a Mariachi band who sang for us. It was a fun experience. We all talked about Machu Picchu, which we would be touring in the morning. I was really excited!
