Day Hike - Mayflower Lake Base of Mt. Helens
Rachel & I hiked ~4 miles to the base of Mt. Helens at Mayflower Lake, just outside of Breckenridge. We went down the wrong path, and ended up on the wrong side of the mountain…but we met a nice guy from Baltimore who showed us his topo. He also shared his chocolate chips and reminded us it was Father’s day…OOPS!!!
I was happy I had packed the gators, because the snow drifts were very deep, and we were able to navigate without getting wet. When we got to our turn around time, we took a bunch of pictures-at Mayflower Lake (11,6?? Ft).
On the way back to the car, I showed Rachel how to boot ski, and also how to glissade. It was her first time! It was a very small drift, so we didn’t need ice axes. But, I told her in the future, she should be prepared with an ice ax handy.
I also told her to take off crampons before glissading…but who am I kidding, the girl is from Vegas and she is not into Mountaineering! Regardless, I’m happy I got to be the one to show her. We left Breckenridge around 4pm, and made it home for dinner with Dennis. Wonderful day out!
