Cross Country Ski – Snow Mountain Ranch

At 5:50 am on Saturday, I left to meet Dan F. and Mike at the Wooly Mammoth Parking Carpool lot in Morrison. Our destination was YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch. Mike was kind enough to drive his van, so we had plenty of room. I quickly dozed off for an hour of much needed zzzz.

We arrived at the ranch, and had some muffins (courtesy of Mike). Mine was pineapple coconut, yummy! We saw the building open up, as staff started to sweep the porches. I headed down for the rental gear. I was fitted with intermediate Soloman ski’s and boots for classic skiing.

Around 8:30am we headed out, into slightly snowy conditions, with the temperature around 20 degrees. There was some ice beneath the couple inches of new powder, so it would be a fast day. I was happy for the powder, and excited at how much faster the intermediate skiis were than the beginner ones I’ve had up to now.

We were out for about 3 hours, when it became gusty and the flurries thickened. Time for Lunch! Over lunch, the weather became nice again-but we were all pretty tired. It was a great day of skiing, with very few falls, and a surprising amount of uphill action.

I was back in Denver by 2:30pm, and able to go for a nice afternoon stroll with Dennis before the sunset.
