On Sunday, Dennis & I drove an hour outside Casper, on a mission to scope out Freemont Canyon. I didn’t know how my back would hold up as I was suffering a very hideous muscle spasm. However, since we were staying in Casper, I just had to check it out!
I bought a guidebook called “Freemont Canyon Dome Rock Wyoming” by Steve Petro. It does a pretty good job at relaying information, but a bit of scrambling around on both sides of the canyon really help to grasp where the climbs are…sometimes it can be a bit confusing just looking at the drawings in the book.
In general, I’d recommend the book. Besides, it’s very affordable (10 bucks!).
The best idea, if you are fortunate, is to run into the locals. They ended up being way nice and totally psyched to share beta. I had some fantastic conversations about the climbing there and rap strategies. It can be a bit tricky as one can’t always see where the climb starts.
I took a ton of pictures, but here are the best of the bunch…check out the rest on Flickr!
