Rock Climbing – Elevenmile Canyon – Day 1

Elevenmile Canyon, CO
On Friday, Dennis & I headed to Elevenmile Canyon State Park, out of C-Springs, CO. Our immediate goal was to snag a good campsite for the group. Everybody else would be getting there in the am on Saturday, so we were hoping there’d be something available in the Canyon.

We arrived at the mouth of Elevenmile at around 3pm, and it was clear there were no open sites available. All the walk-ins were taken. Darn! The ranger informed us that there was a campsite (Blue Mountain) which was just 1 mile down the road.

Dennis Preparing Camp
We ended up with this lovely site (#8), at Blue Mountain. It is a great site for a group. We were able to park all 4 cars, no problem. (Of course, there was an extra fee for the two extra cars, but no biggie!).

Dennis & I set up camp, and then we headed out for a little drive down Elevenmile. I wanted to scope it out before the next days climbing.

Here’s a picture looking back at Lake George community from the mouth of the canyon.

Elevenmile Canyon Tunnels
The drive down Elevenmile is really pretty, but ya have to be careful as there are a lot of rednecks who drive way to fast (and in the center of the road). We saw a lot of folks fishing in the River, and some folks swimming.

It was a beautiful afternoon. We went back to camp and made a huge salad for dinner. I got a fire going (of course!) and we sat around the glowing flames. It started getting cold, so I fired up the jet boil for some hot cocoa and we watched the fire die down.

I was very excited to climb on Saturday!
