Shelf Road – Trip Report

Shelf Road View from Cactus Cliffs
On March 1st, Dennis & I drove down to Shelf Road for a day of fun in the sun. The forecast was for a beautiful day, so we were eager to get outside. It ended up being a half day, as my elbows started hurting around 3pm. Climbing was fantastic (a little chossy), but the routes were fun.

I ended up climbing the following routes at the Dawn Wall: Chompin’ at the Cholla (5.9)**, Six More Bottles of Basco (5.10b)** (2x), and Don’t Be Messin’ with Ma Moves (5.10c/d)** Picture is of me at cleaning the anchors.

We got there around 10 am and by then, the crag was packed. There were ropes on virtually every moderate climb. In some areas, people were already waiting in line, reserving their spot in the que with their ropes. (more…)

A Small Section of Wall Street crag in Moab Roadside Climbing at it's best! We Made Friends in Moab

Holly & I woke up to sub-freezing temperatures. She took an early morning stroll while I slept in. Around 10 am we headed out, stopping in on this rad cafe in downtown Moab. I got a bagel sandwhich-jalepeno cheese & egg on a wheat bagel. YUMMY. We were at the crag, Wall Street around 11am. The sun had barely started warming the rock. It was freezing to the touch, not to mention inside the crack! We walked up and down the wall, with the guidebook.

Holly's Dancing Antics at Red Rocks Clare Belaying at Pantywall
Clare & Holly Big Smiles after Climbing at Red Rocks Holly Belaying at Pantywall

It’s amazing how much weather can change in a couple weeks. I was at the Pantywall on Thanksgiving and it was tank top weather. Not so today, Holly & I were out with longsleeves & jackets. We were determined to get some climbing in on our trip to Colorado, so stopping off at Red Rocks seemed perfect. Holly had not been out in awhile, and I thought the Pantywall would be perfect for us.

Clare Red Hot on Red Rocks Red Rocks First Pullout from Pantywall Typical David (the jester) - Typical Rachel (the crankster)

On Thanksgiving, I went climbing with my friends Rachel and David Burns (been way too long since I’ve seen that guy!). It was a little chilly, so we went to the Pantywall. The routes there are all quite fun, and it’s a popular place, so I was mentally prepared to wait in line. My goal was two part – first to have fun climbing and second to enjoy being with my pals.

Start of Fote Hog (5.6) is at the tree on the left. Martha happy to have conquered the bulge on Fote Hog Clare at the belay on Fote Hog

On Sunday, I woke up fresh and ready to send. Fote Hog was ours for the taking! We got to the crag, and unfortunately there was a party of 3 parked at the base. They hadn’t even started putting the route up yet. It was pretty obvious they were all beginners-so I figured we’d be waiting for awhile. It was a little chilly, so waiting didn’t bug me.

I had a fantastic time climbing on Sunday, it seemed I was finally warmed up and ready to attack the rock. Too bad we didn’t have another day there! (more…)
