Hagerman Peak – Day 1

Friday, August 26th, 2011

On Friday morning, Dennis, Linda, and I woke up ~well rested from an enjoyable night at the Beaver Lake Lodge. Their breakfast time didn’t start until later in the morning, so I had prepared breakfast bagels in advance. Our room had a microwave, so I was able to heat things up…nice!

Hagerman & Snowmass from Lead King Basin Road
We left the lodge early and drove down Lead King Basin Trail Road to the Geneva Lake North Fork Trail Head. The Lead King Basin road is definitely one which requires high clearance.

Lead King Basin Drive
4wd is helpful for a couple of really rough sections. If the road is wet, I would not attempt it due to perilous dropoffs, very bad rutting, and creek crossings. When we got to the TH, there were just a few cars. There was room for ~15. (more…)

Mt. Yale (14,196 ft) – Day Hike

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Barry, Josie, and I did a wonderful loop hike of Mt. Yale. We started at Avalanche Gulch Trailhead, at 5am. Climbed up the gulch to a saddle at 11,900 ft; arriving at 7:45am.
Sign Pointing to East Ridge of Yale
We exited the saddle, saying goodbye to the CO Trail, and made our way up the East ridge of Mt. Yale.

Along the ridge, Barry traveled a little bit ahead, scouting the best way to navigate various piles of rocks. Sometimes we went right, sometimes left, and sometimes directly over the top! It was nice to have the short wave radios, so we could easily communicate. (more…)

Day Hike – Bison Peak, Lost Creek Wilderness

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

In the slideshow above, I tried to capture the essence of our day hike up Bison Peak, in the Lost Creek Wilderness. It was an amazing hike and included wild rock formations and gorgeous views. Our CMC group spanned many decades, with the youngest member being a teen and the oldest member in their 60s!

Surprisingly, we had many common interests. By the end of the day, I had compiled a booklist of good reads based upon our conversations. I know I am forgetting some of the suggestions, but here is a sample:

Snow Lion
Royal Road to Romance ? (Halliburton)
Rescues in the Rockies (same author as the Colorado 14’er disasters)
East of Eden
Lady Tasting Tea (This was my suggestion)
The Man Who Loved China (Also my suggestion)

Clare & Dennis Hiking the Quiraing
While devouring our abundant Scottish breakfast, we perused local hiking guides. We decided to hike the Quiraing, a mystical rock formation outside of Uig. We hiked from 10:30am to 3pm. Then we drove back to Uig through Staffin following the route Dennis did the day prior on his bike. (more…)
