Day time temps were in the mid 90s, which was scorching on the rock!

I’m glad we had a 70 meter rope, but it still wasn’t quite long enough to combine pitches 3 & 4 without simul-climbing. In future, I would do it with a 60 meter rope, and just know that I’d have to simul-climb.

Wearing the swami belt was uncomfortable and painful. It made me feel grateful for the generations before; it is their pain & suffering which has promoted the shift in design and innovation for safer, lighter, and stronger equipment!

Thank you, Lauren for the extra sling & belay device. Without your extra gear, we wouldn’t have been able to do the climb! More pictures below…

Happy Climber Girls on Top of First Flatiron
Jenny & I climbed a variation of Fandango (5.6) on the First Flatiron, near Boulder, CO. It was a beautiful, sunny, and clear day. We started climbing at 8:50am and finished at 2:40pm, 6.5 hours of excellent climbing for roughly 6 pitches. My average pitch time was ~40 minutes including anchor set-up, and Jenny was running around 25 minutes a pitch. Excellent, work!

Clare Summit of Third Flatiron
I had to make a second trip to the Third Flatiron, so I could lead the odd pitches of the East Face route. Earlier this summer, I did the even ones and was robbed of the true summit by an afternoon summer storm.

When Kris suggested an outing up the famed slab, I was all too excited. Woo-hoo! (more…)

Dan & Clare Celebrate Third Flatiron Success

I saw a post online from Dan, he needed a partner for a weekend romp up the Third Flatiron. I was quite excited to join him, as I had a ton of fun doing the First one two weeks prior. My painful & lingering back/rib injury was not going away, so the gentle slope of the Flatiron was just what the doctor ordered!

Cliffnotes of the Day:
I woke up really early. Met Dan. We arrived at crag, we were third in line. We saw 5 other climbers while we were climbing. We took pictures and climbed quick, just barely getting caught in an afternoon thunder storm. We went out for quesadillas at Morning Sun post climbing.

What a FUN day!

Clare Near SummitClimbergirl & Jim Get Ready to Run up 1st Flatiron
Jim invited me to join him for a romp up the First Flatiron in Boulder, CO. I was (of course) obliging, as I have not yet climbed the Flatirons. I have hiked around them and bouldered at the base of them, but have yet to place my grubby paws on them!

As it was my first time, Jim thought it befitting for me to do the first pitch on lead. What a thoughtful partner! I’m not a connoisseur of slab, so it was a real challenge! I’m so happy I had the opportunity, because it was a thrill. (more…)
