And That's a Rap!
Erin and Clare, Sweet Success on Another Summit!

Climbergirl Prepping to Lower Student

Erin and Slava Hanging Out on First Flatiron

Today, Slava, Erin, and I took two more Basic Rock Climbing Students on their Graduation Climb. Today, James and TeeJay would get to test their mettle against the First Flatiron. I had TeeJay climb with Slava, as I figured they would make a good team. Erin and I took James.

Oddly enough, about 18 months ago, Erin did this climb for the first time, as one of my students. And, now, she gets the opportunity to encourage and help others with their first time. I was very happy she agreed to come along it’s a totally different experience, when others are depending upon you to be the expert!

James Climbing First Flatiron

Turns out, James completed the first pitch (which was awesome!). After the first pitch, he was satisfied with his experience, so he decided to have us lower him. And, since James is an awesome dude, he hiked around to the backside of the flatiron and met us when we completed the climb!

TeeJay did great on the climb. Plus, this guy is always smiling! Slava and he climbed rather slow, but it was Slava’s first time leading this climb and it was TeeJay’s first time cleaning a multi-pitch climb. Also, TeeJay couldn’t get one of my pieces out, so some guy with dreads came along and cleaned it for him. So, I got my gear back (yay!).

Overall, I was happy things worked themselves out. We celebrated our success at Southern Sun. Doesn’t get much better than that!

Rock Climbing – East Face Standard Route, First Flatiron, Boulder

The Foothills of Boulder, CO in Fall
I finally got to lead the even pitches of the East Face of the First Flatiron. I had led the odd pitches before, but not the even pitches. When Doug suggested climbing the route, I was oh-so-happy to oblige!

Doug and Clare Summit First Flatiron
It was a nice fall day, with chilly temps in the shade and a crispness in the air. Winter was definitely around the corner and I was a bit sad to say goodbye to climbing season.

Rock Climbing – CMC Boulder Leader’s Day

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

The summer is coming soon and with it comes CLIMBING season!

In order to get all the rock climbing leaders psyched up, Jeffrey arranged an outing on the First Flatiron. The plan was to climb various routes and then talk about setting up some summer climbs for CMC members. It was a great deal of planning on Jeffrey’s part and I was happy to take part in the fun!

I climbed with Slava and Mike. We carried up some fresh fruit for everybody to enjoy after the climbing was over. On the way up Bakerdango (what I like to call my variation of Fandango-starting at Baker’s Way), we ran into Rick. Rick was climbing with Eileen and her husband Bob. I also ran into Brenda on the summit and briefly saw Jeffrey as he was ascending the summit ridge. Excellent times!

Rock Climbing – Kamikaze, First Flatiron, Boulder, CO

Doug and I went for a romp up the First Flatiron. We intended to do Zig Zag (5.7). Not so surprisingly, we missed a turn at the very first Zig and ended up on Kamikaze (5.8). Or so we think that’s what happened!

Part of the fun of the Flatirons is routefinding, one never really knows ones true location which makes for an exciting day. We had a blast even though we weren’t really certain where we were; great weather and a “can do” attitude fixed the wandering woes.

CMC Climbers After First Flatiron Fandango Ascent
Gary was kind enough to help lead a group of my Basic Rock Students up the First Flatiron. We climbed the Fandango Variation route in two teams of three.

Team Rich Chile Caramels 3rd Pitch of Fandango
I had Michael and Chris (Team Rich Chile Caramels).

Team Yearning Air Climbs First Flatiron
And, Gary took Ian and Erin (Team Yearning Air).

Team names were generated using our names plugged into an anagram machine (found online somewhere!).
