Packs & Racks
In the month of June, I donated 3 Saturdays to the Boulder section of the CMC (Colorado Mountain Club). I volunteered as an assistant instructor for their summer Rock Leader School. There were two classroom sessions and three field trips.
Cary Places Hexes Eric Placing Protection & David Judging
There was a leader (Chris-not pictured), myself, and 4 students (Cary, David, Eric, and Ilene). These are pictures from our first field day, where students learned about rock climbing protection. Passive vs. Active, judging the strength of the protection placement, when to place, spacing of the placing, and anchor systems.

Chris is a very good instructor. The students were definitely in good hands! (more…)

Silver Plume Mountain (12,457 ft) Snowshoe Hike

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

On Sunday, I had a fabulous time summitting Silver Plume Mountain (12,457 ft) along with 7 other members of the CMC. This was my 2nd Co-Lead (aka Leader In Training) hike, and I was fortunate to have Dave as my sponsoring Leader.
Silver Plume Mountain SE Ridge TOPO & Elevation Profile
Dave was thought provoking and challenged me to continually assess the conditions, decisions, and mood of the group. I decided to be a consensus building leader, so my approach was to include the group as much as possible. Dave helped to cement, in my mind, where & when the consensus approach might need to be adjusted-such as situations with a “Big Ego Climber” or “Indecisive Sheeples”.

Lucky for me, we had neither of these situations during this trip. We immediately gelled as a group and had a fun & challenging day! (more…)

Day Hike – CO Trail Segment 2

Lunch Time on CO Trail
I would like to lead hikes, scrambles, and possibly climbs with the CMC once a month, as a volunteer. In order to be a trip leader with the CMC, I must be a Leader in Training (LIT) for a couple of hikes. This is my first LIT. I spent a lot of time organizing travel plans and researching the route. I really wanted everybody to have a safe and fun day!
CO Trail Topo Segment 2
We organized two groups of folks; Team Uphill and Team Downhill.

TU was comprised of Karen, Sharon, Brenda, Donna, and their Leader, the token Male, Tom.
TD featured Kelly, Linda, Georgia, and yours truly!

The plan was for each team to start at opposite ends of CO Trail Segment 2 and meet in the middle for lunch. We would then continue down the trail and meet up back in Conifer. (more…)

Rappel Demonstration
On Saturday, I headed up to meet the Boulder Rock School Instructors for their training day. Brenda, the CMC coordinator contacted me and asked if I would be interested in volunteering my skills for the day. I couldn’t say no!

Franchesco and Roger Practice Rope Handling Skills
We reviewed knots, freeing the hands from the belay, passing knots on rappel, and ascending ropes using prusiks. I paired up with Franchesco and Roger for the day. Jill gave us a great review of the Mule-Munter Hitch. Thanks! (more…)

Snowshoe Hike – Avalanche Awareness Class – CMC

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Probe Demonstration
The CMC offers an Avalanche Awareness class, many times over the course of a winter. As I’m fond of snowshoe hiking and cross country, I thought it would be a good idea to partake. So, I joined about 30 CMC members for an all day session near Rogers Pass, CO. I carpoolled with Robert, who was nice enough to drive his Jeep piled full of people & gear to the Trail Head.

My Group: Connie, Bryan, Adam, Robert, and Karsen (Instructor in Rust Colored Jacket)
Avalanche Awareness Primer
The instruction from Karsen was first rate, he spent a great deal of time with us (more than any other instructor!). I thought he did a great job of explaining the essential details and repetitively reviewing the material. (more…)
