Portugal, Day 8 – Day Hike, Cabo Da Roca (Westernmost Point of Europe)

We completed a lovely but strenuous seaside hike to Cabo Da Roca (The Westernmost Point of Europe). The trail wound it’s way up and down multiple ridges which abruptly cliffed out into the Atlantic.

We scaled up and down these undulating spines and enjoyed the path most when it wasn’t covered by this evil spikey bush. At times, we each were writhing in pain as the little needles stabbed our calves and ankles. Luckily, Pedro usually charged ahead and managed to find the way. But he was the least prepared to bush whack, having worn 3/4 length pants.

Portugal, Day 5 – Hiking the Postman’s Way (Carminho do Cartiero)

Our adventure of the day was to do a lovely and historically significant 13km loop hike in the Rio de Frades area. In a not so distant past, this huge area was serviced by one postman, who would routinely hike along this path to deliver the mail. In this hilly and mountainous region of Portugal, it was quite the task! I imagine the postman being a superbly fit guy!

Later that night, Jess made us a very special meal of roast lamb, potato, garden greens, and rice. The food was so amazing it’s just hard to describe the level of deliciousness. The best I can do is a picture:

Day Hike – North Table Mountain, Golden, CO

Dennis and I went hiking up to the top of North Table Mountain in Golden. It was a cool spring morning, with threatening thunderstorms in the afternoon.

It was originally supposed to be a CMC newbie welcome hike, but everybody except 1 gal bailed…So the three of us went out anyways. On our way back, there was hail and blowing snow for small bouts of time. Exciting!

Day Hike – White Rock La Madre Springs Loop, Red Rocks, Nevada

I had been meaning to take my annual trip to Vegas, but time was never right. Finally, I decided, I better just make it happen. Although climbing was not to be the main event, this trip! One of my best bud’s, Rachel, is pregnant so I wanted to spend some quality time with her before the little one arrived.

So, instead of climbing, we decided to go for a lovely loop hike at Red Rocks. The White Rock La Madre Springs loop hike is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours! In VFFs, it’s even more fun. Rachel, our friend Erin (also a climber), and I enjoyed an unseasonably warm and windless desert December day.

Erin is getting married soon, so there was also much talk of her wedding plans. What a girrrly hike we had, it was full of delightful discussion-babies and weddings galore! (more…)

Day 9 – Inca Trail Day 5, Machu Picchu

Our wake up call came at 5:30am while Rumwaldo and Julian were busy cooking up our last breakfast of the Inca Trail Tour. After 4 days of hiking, I really felt like sleeping extra. I passed on the early morning tea, offered at 5am, and went straight for the coffee an hour later. I made it to the mess tent just in time to grab 2 slices of french toast Alex had set aside for me. How nice! Boy, was it ever delicious!

Everybody was very excited to be seeing the Machu Picchu ruins. I was too, but I couldn’t believe the big trek was over! On the one hand, I was sad to be leaving the Sacred Valley. However, on the other hand, I was looking forward to a hot shower and a bed back in Cusco. (more…)
