Clare & Dennis on Top of North Table Mountain

Dennis and I went hiking up to the top of North Table Mountain in Golden. It was a cool spring morning, with threatening thunderstorms in the afternoon.

It was originally supposed to be a CMC newbie welcome hike, but everybody except 1 gal bailed…So the three of us went out anyways. On our way back, there was hail and blowing snow for small bouts of time. Exciting!

Trail Running, Golden Trail Runners

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

On Sunday morning, I met Brian and one other dude for a nice 1.5 hour trail run. The temps were hovering around freezing and, at 7:30am, the trails were sure to be still hardpacked. We left from Golden, and ran up the trails to North Table Mountain Plateau. The trails were indeed dry.

The run uphill was fairly mellow, with plenty of switchbacks. My legs were a little fatigued from the previous day’s climbing. Lucky for me, Brian was taking a fairly moderate pace, so I wasn’t left behind. Also the other dude’s dog kept wandering off, which gave me a chance to catch my breath.

We ran for about half an hour until we surmounted the North Table Mountain Plateau, 800 feet of elevation gain. The sun started to peak out from the hazy sky, and the warmth felt good. There was 4-8 inches of snow up on the plateau, and in short order my feet were completely soaked.

After running around up there for about 40 minutes, we headed back downhill. Yippee! We made it back to the car around 9am and chatted briefly before going our separate ways. What a nice way to start the day!

Jenny Enjoying Deck Chairs (5.9)

Coors Brewing Factory in Winter
On Saturday morning, I woke up early and joined Jenny in a birthday run. We ran around her place, near downtown Denver. It was a Ghetto style run, but also featured a long stretch adjacent to the Platte River. (What a treat that was!). We ran for about 45 minutes, a great way to start the day. (more…)

Margaret walking, Coors Brewing Factory brewing

On Sept. 21st, I met Margaret at the REI Flagship store in Denver for a day of climbing at North Table Mountain. She was feeling rather ill (a nasty nasty cold), poor thing.

We drove up to Golden, and by 11am we were climbing. There was hardly anybody up there. I had made a bunch of printouts of The Risk Area and Winterfest Wall. We ended up walking right past the Risk Area and landed at Twelve Pack Wall.

Margaret Leading Clare Spotting

Clare Leading Barry Belaying

On Friday, I got off work early to drive my friend Barry from his interview in North Denver, and my friend Margaret (who was visiting) to the sunny cliffs in Golden.

It was raining in the hills, but by the time we got to Golden, it had mostly dried up. We led some 3 pitches (unknown climbs) and we left when it started getting dark. Climbs were ~5.10/5.11. Margaret didn’t struggle much on any of them, so that’s how I know.
