Doug tells me that he and Kent are planning to climb the Skywalker Couloir. Then he adds the phrase, “If you want to come, you’re welcome to join us”. Oh boy! It’s an offer I can’t refuse. This classic snow climb has been recommended to me by several other Colorado Mountain Club members, and when it’s “in”, it is a “must do”. Tilden is invited as well, so that makes a strong party of 4. Perfect!

Before the climb, I’m a little nervous. I haven’t done any snow climbing since Rainier’s Emmons Glacier route, almost a year ago. Furthermore, Rainier only had one short section that was steep; a 50 ft section which was probably around 40 degrees. We were at that crux in the middle of the night. I wasn’t sure how I’d do in daylight with full knowledge of what I was getting myself into! Plus, Skywalker has a much longer steep section than what I experienced before.

I contacted my friend Robert, who has done both climbs (Rainier and Skywalker) to find out what he thought of the cruxes of both routes. Robert described to me what it was like, comparing and contrasting each. It was his opinion that I would be fine and he said I should not hesitate.

So, I didn’t!

Erin Scrambling Up Mt. Bancroft
Erin Enjoying the Scrambling on Mt. Bancroft

Erin and I attempted to climb Mt. Bancroft (13,250 ft). We did not have a 4WD vehicle, so we drove as far down Loch Lomond road as possible. We parked at the first gate, after chickening out and turning around after 0.5 miles of driving down the boulder and potholed road. Later, we discovered a Subi which made it to the 2nd gate, so either they have insane car maneuvering skills or they had wooden planks and props in the back… (more…)

Trip Leader Clare on the summit of La Plata. You can see Ellingwood Ridge stretching out behind me!

For the Colorado Mountain Club’s Centennial Celebration, I led this mountaineering trip up the Ellingwood Ridge of La Plata. It’s a long and arduous 4th class ascent. After doing it, I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Ellingwood deserves respect and admiration. With a group of solid climbers, we negotiated the rubble and solved the puzzle. The summit was achieved, but it didn’t come easy! (more…)

Climbergirl on Summit of Tenmile Peak (12,933 ft)

As part of the Colorado Mountain Club’s 100 year celebration, trip leaders were asked to lead as many trips up the top 100 highest peaks in Colorado. I selected to lead three separate trips, under this Centennial Celebration!

Tenmile Peak Hike - Ladies Only!
CMC Strong Mountain Mamas!

Tenmile Peak Hike - Gents Only
CMC Strong Mountain Men!

On Saturday, I led a trip up Tenmile Peak 1, which was actually a training trip for one of my three Centennial Celebration trips. All the folks hiking Tenmile had the intention of later summitting Pigeon and Turret Peaks.

As the trip leader, I was anxious to see how the personalities would settle and if people would pull together as a team, or if ego’s or differences in hiking speeds would be a problem.

Mountaineering – Pike’s Peak

Sharon & David Ascending Pikes Peak
Our High Point, ~12,500 ft with 60+mph wind gusts and -17dF temps!

Tom Ascending Pike's Peak
Tom, our enthusiastic leader!

All night, the wind shook Barr Camp. Sometimes, the windows would rattle. We woke up fairly early and then headed into the main part of the cabin for breakfast. I love the walnut & fruit oatmeal they make-YUM!

Around 9am, Sharon, David, Tom (leader), and I headed out for an attempt to climb Pike’s Peak. (Linda decided she didn’t want to go for it, and headed home). Dennis planned to meet us on our descent. It was -13dF when we left and very gusty; conditions which we hoped would change for the better. (more…)
