The Coca Museum
Our Tour Group in The Coca Musuem

On Tuesday, Dennis was not feeling well. He had major stomach problems, so he slept in while I enjoyed breakfast. We had to check out of the hotel and move to the Hotel Warari, to start our Intrepid Travels tour. We later met our tour group and took a walking tour of Cusco, which included a tour of the Coca Musuem. Then, for dinner, we went out to eat as a group and called it an early night.

Rafael and His Truck
Our Guide, Rafael, and his trusty truck!

On Saturday afternoon, I met our mountaineering guide and driver for the week, Rafael. He is short, probably 5 feet tall, but with broad shoulders and calf muscles the size of my thighs. Within the first 30 minutes of our meeting, I was informed that he had summited Everest twice, Manaslu once, and Denali eight times. It was an impressive resume. He explained to me that he also does personal training and fitness coaching, along with running his guide service. He trained in Chamonix and he happens to have climbed Cotopaxi over 670 times! We were in good hands and I couldn’t wait to climb some mountains!

Our first order of business was to went to fetch Tilden at the airport, then we would travel straight to Otavalo. It took us a couple hours to reach Otavalo and we stopped once for coffee and biscochos (like biscotti). I was so excited to see Tilden and we were both equally stoked to be climbing mountains in Ecuador.

The Famous Otavalo Market
Craft Market in Otavalo, Ecuador

Transporting Goods at Market
The vendors routinely carry these bags to and from the market to the trucks for transport! It probably weighed 400 pounds and I couldn’t even lift it an inch!

After the craft market, we met up with Rafael for dinner and then walked around Otavalo. It would be an early start, for our hike up Fuya-Fuya, so we didn’t stay out too late.

River Rafting – Brown’s Canyon, Buena Vista, CO

Rafting Brown's Canyon on the Arkansas River
Here we are manning the front of the boat, while our expert river guide, Curt, steers the back.

On Friday, Dennis and I decided to raft down the Arkansas River. In particular, we ran the Brown’s Canyon portion; 12 miles of mostly 3rd class rapids with two awesome 4th Class Rapids to cap it all off!

We decided to go with the Acquired Tastes Rafting guides because they had availability last minute AND they promised to include two awesome class 4 rapids; Seidels Suckhole and Twin Falls. Since we had done some pretty advanced rafting up in Canada, we were ready for adventure!

Our guide, Curt, was really mellow and made the whole trip a ton of fun. About 2/3 the way down the river, we stopped and had a very nice, ample sandwich buffet with chips and cookies, to boot! I was really happy that we had rented wetsuits with booties as the water was very cold and we were soaking wet the whole time!

Running Of The Green 7K
Ready to Run!

Two days after my 20 hour Longs Peak challenge, I supported Dennis as he “competed” in the Running of the Green, 7k race. I was still fatigued after my adventure with Slava, but I managed to peel myself out of bed and put on some green clothes.

We walked over to the starting line and met up with Julie, Jeff, and a whole bunch of their friends from the run club. I also managed to run into Josh, who was competing with some of his buddies from work.

Say Bye-Bye to 2013

The Last Moments of 2013

Happy New Year - Smooch

Dennis and I join Doug and Kristina at the Thin Man for a New Years Party. We ring in the new year with 1920’s style and music. Champagne is flowing and we dance until our feet hurt. We make a toast to the New Year and say goodbye to 2013.
