Snowshoe Hike – Herman Gulch Trail Head

Citadel to Pettingell
Erin and I met at oh-dark-thirty at the Herman Gulch Trail Head. We were planning to snowshoe up to the basin below Citadel and Pettingell. It’s a nice aerobic snowshoe, up a steep gulch, with fabulous views of the mountains. We had a lovely time romping up the trail; happy that we didn’t need the snowshoes until the last hour or so of our hike. We ate lunch at a rocky outcropping which was nicely sheltered from the wind.

The hike was great, but I found out a week later that I left my very expensive red OR mountaineering mittens on a post outside of the bathroom. By the time I realized I lost them, it was undoubtedly too late to recover them.

In tears, I took a trip to REI. The poor guy working in the glove/mitten section had to discern what I was asking for, through my sobs and intermittent blowing of the nose.

Plum Line
It was my 2nd separate adventure to try and find the Citadel. Last year, I hunted around for 3.5 hours searching and no dice. This time, after 45 minutes of thrashing about in the woods, we managed to find it, beginning our hike at an alternative starting point! (The second option mentioned in the book).

I refuse to take credit for the “discovery” as it was mostly the mad map reading and interpretive skills of Jen and the patience of Jenny who got us there.

I will, however, take credit for galavanting into the woods and pitching a mean fit in search of THE fastest way back to the car. I am slightly embarassed to report just how mean I was, but at least I was able to find the right way back! I later apologized to the girls for my selfish & pissy bossiness, I just *really* did not want to spend another hour being eaten by bugs and out in the relentless heat. I was determined to learn the proper way to the crag without having to take a third trip there!

Max, Stan, & Jen In Search of The Citadel
On Saturday, Stan, Jen, Max, and I went in search of The Citadel. It seemed this area had a variety of climbs, with a mixture of styles. We decided to give it a shot.

We found the parking lot okay, and off we went down the trail.

My Favorite Badger Hiking in the Voo

After around 10-15 minutes of walking, Jen & Max made a bee-line for a crag, charging uphill toward a pile of rocks. In the book, it says, “at 0.5 miles Mechanical Transmission Crag is visible on the North”, which appeared to be where they were headed.

I figured it was not the Citadel because the Citadel was supposed to be about a mile from the car pull-out. I just knew we hadn’t walked a mile. So, Stan & I headed uphill to bring them back to the trail, and then we all walked for another 30 minutes down the trail.

At this point, we think we spotted the crag to our north. Did we? (more…)
